Sangre y sexo: The Films of José Larraz

Blood and sex. Brilliant. We love it and cult Spanish genre filmmaker José Ramón Larraz's films are dripping in it.

Collecting together six of Larraz's best films, Sangre y Sexo provides a perfect cross-section of Larraz's work - from the higher-brow but still full of sauce and slayings Whirlpool, featuring a psychopathic photographer stalking his latest muse through the wet woods behind his sugar momma's country house, to Rest in Pieces - which combines his talents for conjuring atmosphere and the grotesque to thrilling effect as a young couple are pitched against an unspeakable evil emanating from their recently inherited country house.

Deadly Manor also focuses on a house full of terror and horror, but here José comes at the material from the slasher angle as a gaggle of teens crashing for the night in a seemingly abandoned house are picked off by an unforgettable killer. Edge of the Axe is the second showcase for Larraz's slasher chops and is chock full of brilliant set pieces, excellent kills, a charmingly dated idea of computers and AI, as well as an ending that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Vampyres and The Coming of Sin are Larraz at his bawdy best. Sensual and full of lust and lusting. Vampyres was shot and is set in England with a pair of sexy bloodsucking ladies preying on passing motorists who they tempt back to their mansion to drain. The Coming of Sin has a very Jess Franco feel to it and serves as a great entry point to Larraz for Franco fans. A wealthy woman takes in a young gipsy girl in the midst of a sexual awakening who becomes obsessed with a dream of a handsome young naked man who rides a horse bareback. When her dreams become reality, she and her new landlady's lives will be changed forever.
